Mods for my Yamaha HS-8 Monitors

Swapped the NJM4558 IC-s in every monitor with OPA1602 IC-s and also removed the limiter circuit.

Now, they don't push exaggerated mids that much, and are a little flatter. A little better for accurate mixing and monitoring.

  1. Were the IC's held down with any sort of glue or epoxy? I've seen comments suggesting such and thats prevented me from attempting these mods. All I have is a temp controlled soldering iron but no hot air rework station. Would you attempt this mod with only a soldering iron? TIA

    1. When you use a hot air rework station it automatically melts anything, even if there is a glue bond underneath (but there wasn't as far as I could tell, or it simply melted away).

I wouldn't recommend any attempt on such mods using only the soldering iron, but maybe you could snip each leg very carefully individually with a high quality thin snipping tool, but, really wouldn't recommend it...you can lift pads easily when cutting like this. Gotta be honest, this mod is not actually worth it :). I clearly compared one monitor to another when one was modded and the other wasn't, and while there is a difference, it's IMO too subtle.
